Some Great Advancements in Lung Cancer Research

According to the Center for Disease Control, around 10 million people are diagnosed with chronic bronchitis yearly. It's estimated that 25 million people live with asthma across the world. If you're working in an occupation exposed to asbestos and other carcinogens, you could be at the risk of developing a lung disease.

Although the number of new lung cancer cases is declining, unfortunately, these are replaced by recent cases of other lung diseases. Some advances in research have led to improved detection and cancer treatment. Other discoveries are leading to cures.

Advancements in Lung Cancer Research

  • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy medications are a promising cancer treatment method that harnesses the immune system's power to fight cancer. Unlike chemotherapy, these medications don't damage healthy cells. This is good news because patients experience fewer adverse side effects while still being treated for cancer effectively. It's also a crucial part of many multimodal therapy plans.

  • Biomarkers: Biomarkers, which are molecular changes in tumour DNA, allow physicians to diagnose lung cancer earlier and inform treatment decisions. Lung cancer research and biomarkers are helping to drive medical care toward a more individualized approach. Various biomarkers can help to identify and diagnose a variety of health conditions. When these come into the picture, doctors can create an effective treatment plan customized to their unique needs. Researchers are on the clock to find new biomarkers that would allow them to detect and treat conditions before they become severe.

  • Radiation Therapy: As research has identified new ways to deliver radiation more accurately, it's become easier and safer to receive radiation therapy. This includes adaptive dosimetry and volumetric imaging, which help physicians avoid unnecessary radiation. 3DCRT and VMAT are two great examples of these technologies.

Conclusion

Technology is helping doctors treat lung cancer, and there will be more options for patients with this disease in the future in any cancer hospital across the globe. Advancements in technology enable us to increase the range of treatments available for people with lung cancer, giving them a much brighter outlook.

Any good cancer hospital (like HCG in India) is equipped or will soon be equipped with all the advancements in lung cancer treatment to save lives.
