What causes Oral Cancer?

 Cancer begins in the mouth, also known as the oral cavity. This area of the body contains the inner layer of the lips, lips, cheeks, teeth, gums, most of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and the bony roof of the mouth or the tight palate.  

A specific cancer of the oral region is called oropharyngeal cancer, a throat cancer. Oropharyngeal cancer develops in the oropharynx behind the throat and behind the mouth. Oropharyngeal cancer involves the back of the tongue, the back of the mouth, the tonsils, and the upper throat wall. Oral Cancer and oropharyngeal cancers are also considered cancers of the head and neck.   



 Causes of Oral Cancer  

  1. Tobacco use and alcohol consumption are the most important risk factors for these diseases.  

  1. Exposure to ultraviolet light, prolonged exposure to sunlight, or tanning beds can increase the risk of lip cancer.  

  1. With a diet low in nutrients, fruits, and vegetables  

  1. Poor hygiene  

  1. Betel nut use, crushed betel nut (sometimes chewing is used in conjunction with tobacco)  

  1. Genetic syndromes, especially congenital anaemia or dyskeratosis  

  1. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection  

  1. Suppression of the immune system, such as rejection of the oragn transplant 

  1. Lichen plan  

  1. Graft-vs. Host Disease (GVHD), which develops after bone marrow-related stem cell transplantation  

  1. Marijuana Use, as suggested by recent studies, increases the risk of head and neck cancer in individuals.  

Symptoms of Oral Cancer 

 Common symptoms of Oral Cancer include 

  1. Untreated persistent lip or mouth ulcers  

  1. Persistent lip or mouth pain  

  1. Lump or thickening of the cheeks or lips  

  1. White patches or red patches on the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, or lining of the mouth  

  1. Sore throat or constant feeling like something is stuck in the throat  

  1. Difficult to chew or swallow  

  1. Difficulty in moving the jaw or tongue  

  1. Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth  

  1. Jaw swelling hurts or does not fit properly due to ligation of the jaws  

  1. Loose teeth  

  1. Toothache or jaw pain  

  1. Change in tone  

  1. A lump in the throat  

  1. Weight loss  

  1. Persistent odour  

  1. Persistent earache
